I ran for the kids
So it’s all done and dusted, the kids have been run for, and they are now richer to the tune of 500,000 smackers. Actually, it’s the hospital that’s richer. Either way, everyone’s happy.
Race report
The race felt harder, but the time was better than last year, if that makes any sense. I seemed to struggle a lot more to keep up the 4k pace, especially going over the various bumps.
5k splits:
5k - 20 minutes
10k - 20 minutes
15.2k - 17 something
Total - 57 something.
That third split looks a bit faster doesn’t it? The difference can be explained by:
- being mostly flat or downhill
- taking on-board a carbo gel, and
- desperately trying to chase down Tiger Boy.
Good things
The bag drop was a lot better organised this year. The time was faster than last year, (already a fairly good time I thought) suggesting some of the marathon training is paying off.
Also I got to meet and/or renew acquaintance with some Cool Running and Ausrun-type folks, including Superjacent, AJH, and Chilliman.
Bad things
There’s some controversy about the traps about the actual length of the course. More than a touch disappointing….
Where do they get those dickheads who do the announcing for these races? Oh, I just checked the official site - it’s probably Mix 101.1. Citylink provides the course, Nike the shoes, Mazda the car and Mix 101.1 provides the dickhead announcers. It makes sense.
Em, who I confidently predicted would finish the thing in around an hour, was a no-show, due to family problems that couldn’t wait. It’s disappointing, but there will be other races.

Actually I forgot about the announcer and you are 100% correct. I assume you don’t want to use the photo that is floating about the net, the one at the rotunda.
It was good to meet you yesterday John, and congratulations on a great time. Maybe my 2008 goal should be your 2007 result! Then again I think the sub 1 hour may be just beyond me!
Well done.
What a bunch of likely lads hey
Steven often manages to close his eyes too.
Thank goodness I was spared those announcers, just further reminder as to why I don’t listen to commercial FM.
And big congrats on your time, looking very good for May.
Amazing time JR. Just the thought of running that fast gives me a headache.
