nasty, brutish, and short

Don’t worry, I’m not referring to Grant Denyer who, though undeniably short, doesn’t seem terribly brutish. Actually, I think a touch of nastiness might help him - it might balance out the smarmy-gittishness in him.

Smarmy git

Anyway, moving on. Today’s blog title has very little to do with light entertainment personalities of any description, instead it’s as succinct a description of this morning’s 12km run as I can come up with. It also happens to be part of a reasonably famous quote.

10 points to the first person who can identify the quote, without Google.

  1. sounds a bit like my 8km run this afternoon!

  2. What, smarmy?

By the way, I can’t figure out what’s worse about that photo - his smile, the way he holds the magazine, the way his shirt is tucked into his jeans, the one button too many left undone, the belt or the acid wash.

    It’s a symphony of yuck!

  3. Struggling to recall my first year of philosophy at Uni and I was thinking Hume, but actually I am pretty sure it was Hobbes.

The post title jumped right out at me because it is a phrase I recall alot, generally while watching the goings on in the world on the evening news.

  4. BTW, who or what is Grant Denyer?

  5. Grant already tried to dirty his image- don’t you remember when he said he felt like he had spent the night with a large black man as part of his daily weather gig. I don’t think he is allowed to write his own material anymore.
No idea on the quote- maybe someone describing Grant’s career hopefully.

  6. No real idea about the quote, if I had to guess, maybe someone describing Napolean ? Or maybe describing some battle or other in some war ?

  7. Well done Em. You win a prize - it was Thomas Hobbes. Full quote: “solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short”. He was referring to life in a state of nature, but I think it applies to GD quite well.

    Here’s the article on wikipedia

  8. BTW - I don’t buy that “I’m too cool to know who Grant Denyer is” thing Em. I bet you’re a secret devotee of “Australia’s got talent” AND “It takes two” and every morning you “wake up with friends” on Sunrise.

    Come on: own up.

  9. Umm, googled, those shows are on channel 7, I honestly couldn’t tell you the last time I watched anything on channel 7, seriously! I have a unique and troubling defect whereby my brain will explode if I am forced to watch reality TV of any kind, and no one wants to clean up that mess.

For some reason that quote always reforms in my mind as “Life is short and brutish”, maybe I have just re interpreted it that way.

  10. No idea about the quote but Grant Denyer looks like a total boofhead in that picture!!
